Celebrating the Legacy of Willi Smith: The Creator of Streetwear

in Feb 15, 2023

Black History Month is a time to reflect on the contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout history, and this year, we wanted to recognize the late Willi Smith, one of the most innovative and influential fashion designers of our time. Willi Smith was more than just a designer; he was a visionary who blended an urban style with high fashion and paved the way for what we now know today as street couture. In other words, Willi is the creator of streetwear!

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 13, 1948, Willi Smith moved to New York City to attend Parsons School of Design on a scholarship in 1965. Before starting his studies at Parsons, Willi gained valuable experience interning with renowned couturier Arnold Scaasi. In 1976, Willi founded the urban fashion label WilliWear Ltd. and quickly gained recognition for his unique and innovative designs.

Willi Smith was truly ahead of his time and his pioneering spirit is a testament to his unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries in the fashion world. He was a true trailblazer and his contributions to streetwear will never be forgotten. Willi's legacy continues to inspire new generations of designers, and we are grateful for his contributions to the industry.
